Split Brain

First up tonight we’ll be checking out Split Brain, a top down shooter inspired by a combination of Hotline Miami and John Wick. This game features a dual wielding system and promises a fast paced action experience. We’ll be seeing how well the dual wielding system controls and if it can create for a frantic experience like its inspirations.

Blobby

Next up we’ll be checking out Blobby, a puzzle platformer based around a constant bouncing mechanic. Physics based platformers are always a tricky thing to get right, which is why so many Little Big Planet levels end up failing. It’s important to get your controls as tight as possible while making sure your level design can work correctly around the physics themselves.

MiniRL

Lastly we’ll be checking out MiniRL, a procedurally-generated 2D roguelike with puzzle elements. It sets out to have accessible gameplay so that anyone can pick up and play it. This game is created by a web developer of 15 years who’s seeking a career change. We’ll be testing the level of accessability this game has as first time players with no instruction manual.

Axel the Penguin

First up tonight we’ll be checking out a passion project that Ceresoft has been working on for quite a while now. This Sega Master System stylized action platformer is a throwback to the old Mascot platformers of the past. It’s the story of a little penguin by the name of Axel (who’d have guessed), on a quest to save his beloved penguin girlfriend! He’s have to use all of his wit to platform around these puzzling levels. I’ve been keeping a close eye on this one since Ceresoft joined my Discord a while back. We’ve been discussing the game and I’m very exicted to finally check out a demo of it!

Skyhook

Next up we’ll be taking our 2nd look at a person favorite of mine, Skyhook! We checked this game out in 2015, and since then the developer has been HARD at work getting this game to its completion stage. Qazi now believes the game is ready for its full release on Steam, and I’m super excited to see how far its come since our last playthrough! Since the last time I checked it out, melee has been added to the game per my suggestion, and a full Single Player mode has been added as well. We’ll be checking out the Single Player specifically to see what’s been done to improve the experience!

Dragon Game

Our last game of the night is from newcomer BulletProof Outlaws! This game, currently by the name of Dragon Game is a Ludum Dare entry that has been modified to be a full game experience. This game is still in SUPER ULTRA PROTOTYPE MODE!!!! So we’ll be doing alot of things with this one including but not limited to Game Name Brainstorming! It’s gonna be a good time.

Dark Flame

First up tonight we’ll be re-examining a personal favorite of mine, Dark Flame! This 2D action adventure RPG is designed with heavy inspirations from Castlevania and Dark Souls. When I last checked it out I had an absolute blast trying out the different weapon and magic designs against the different enemies. In spite of that I had some concerns about the difficult nature of the game through its unfair enemy movements. This time around I’ll be taking a critical look at how the enemies are designed to engage the player.

Barricade

Next up we’ll be checking out Barricade, a game about block busting! It’s an action puzzle game that’s all about breaking down barriers with style. this game seems to be PACKED full of JUICE! I’m always stoked when I see lots of debris from a massive explosion. I’m going to be paying special attention to all of the visual effects that were put into this game, as well as how they mix up the action puzzle elements.

Chicken Assassin

Our last game of the night stars a special Chicken and his two buddies, Machete I and Machete II. This Chicken’s on the warpath, and he’s not gonna let anything stand in the way of his rampage. We’ll be checking out Chicken Assassin, a game that pretty much says everything you’d ever want to ask about it in the title itself. The concept and the visuals look great, but the gameplay itself does not explmplify itself too well in the video. I’m going to be closely examining the gameplay to determine if it’s strong enough to hold up this awesome concept.

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT

This week we are making a major change to the Indie Insights formula. If you are a Patreon of $5 or more, your feedback will actually show up on stream! I will then take a moment to read the feedback while streaming and discuss it LIVE instead during intermissions. If you are not a Patreon, your feedback will be discussed, but only during intermission. With this change, I hope that we can make this a more interactive stream!

One Way

First up tonight we’re checking out a 2D platformer by the name of One Way. As the name implies, in this game you’re only allowed to go one way! As you move forward, a wall of fire blocks your path from behind, so you need to plan your route accordingly. This can potentially make for some interesting platforming puzzles and gameplay, so let’s see what sort of level design this game comes up with!

Fight the Tentacle

Keeping up with our theme of walls tonight, we’ll be moving on to Fight the Tentacle. This one is all about using an army of scientists to fight off a giant wall of tentacles! You are able to move squads around the battleground and have them do different things to fight the giant lovecraftian mass of pure horror. I promise to keep the hentai references to a minimum!

The World of Akria

Finishing off our theme of walls, to finish off the night we’ll be breaking through a wall we hit many weeks back when we attempted to check out The Underground by Triad Entertainment. Loyal viewers may remember when we attempted to try out a 2D top down MMORPG by the name The Underground, but sadly our stream was SO AWESOME we ended up crashing the whole server! The developer has gotten back to us however with a greatly updated version of the game, including a new name, “The World of Akria”! There have been many changes this time around such as the removal of a class system in favor of a race system, which promises to be less limiting to the player. Let’s see what The World of Akria has too offer!

Möira

First up tonight we’ll be checking out Möira, a Gameboy stylized 2d platformer inspired by such games as Kirby, Mega Man, Duck Tales and more! I was instantly drawn to this game as an old school gamer, it envokes nostalgia on its viewers hard and fast! It’s even got pallete swapping just like when you played Gameboy games on a Gameboy Color, which is something I used to love messing with back when I was a kid. The game features a unique looking spellcraft system through the combining of different powers, which is something I’ve loved since Kirby 64, but have not seen nearly enough. We’re going to be going over this game with a fine-tooth comb to reveal the polish underneath!

Kite

Next up we’ll be checking out Kite for the 2nd time! The first time we checked it out was nearly a year ago now, and in that time developer Lab Cat Games has been working hard to develop a high action top down shooter! Our first time around I had complaints about respawning respawners and the visiblity of some enemies and elements. Since then, Lab Cat Games has been hanging around our Discord and we’ve been working with him to improve his game. We’ll be examining these elements for a second time and see how they’ve changed since our first time around!

Nature’s Zombie Apocalypse

Lastly, a game that REALLY came out of left field, Nature’s Zombie Apocalypse is a top down wave based shooter that is all about ANIMALS KILLING ZOMBIES WITH GUNS. I mean, wow, that sentence alone felt awesome to say. This is a game that sells “wacky crazy fun” from the get-go. I confess when I first saw the video I didn’t think much of it, but somehow the game’s visual charm really pulled me in very quickly. I’m excited to check this out to see if the game itself can retain the same sort of wackiness that the trailer did. If it manages to, I think it could be an excellent example of marketing to your game’s strengths!
